How the Get on the B.U.S. Event Was Born
EmpowerMT’s Get on the B.U.S. Event grew from a conversation about the urgent need to bring our community together to support one another—and the young people at the heart of our work. In a time of significant political and cultural shifts across the country and in Montana, we asked ourselves how we could create a gathering that would not only raise funds, but also strengthen the community that sustains EmpowerMT’s mission.
From that conversation, the idea of the B.U.S. was born.
B.U.S. stands for Belonging, Understanding, and Solidarity—three values that guide EmpowerMT’s work and feel especially vital in this moment. Belonging reflects the need for youth in Montana, and the adults who stand beside them, to feel seen, valued, and connected. Understanding speaks to EmpowerMT’s commitment to creating spaces where diverse voices and lived experiences can be shared, expanding our minds and hearts through dialogue and learning. Solidarity reminds us that resilience and resistance are strongest when we stand together.
The bus itself carries powerful symbolism in movements for freedom and social justice. Throughout history, buses have transported people to the places where change was needed most. They have carried organizers, advocates, and community members ready to take action.
Public buses also represent one of the most inclusive and equalizing spaces in our society—serving every neighborhood and welcoming riders across race, class, age, ability, and background.
EmpowerMT’s Get on the B.U.S. Event is a call to action, inviting our community to come together and commit to Belonging, Understanding, and Solidarity—and to supporting EmpowerMT’s work to build a more just and inclusive Montana.
