Teen Sleep Out on Youth Homelessness

Teen Sleep Out on Youth Homelessness

As you all may know, EmpowerMT is doing a spring campaign focusing on youth empowerment! Our goal is to raise $12,000 to support this work and to raise awareness about issues facing youth in our community. We will officially launch April 15th at our annual Diversity Day Celebration and it will wrap up May 5th at the end of Missoula Gives. Each week we will have a theme. The first week will be about teen suicide, the second week will be about teen homelessness, and the third week will be about youth empowerment.
As a final event for the campaign, EmpowerMT is partnering with Holy Spirit Episcopal Church and the Salvation Army Teen Drop-In Center to put on a Youth Homelessness Sleep-Out. The event will be on April 28th, and will include a community teach in, the creation of youth homelessness care packages, a screening of “The Homestretch” documentary, and youth groups sleeping outside in front of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church.

WHEN: April 28th. 7PM-8AM     WHERE: Holy Spirit Episcopal Church courtyard
EmpowerMT would like to invite your youth group to participate in the Sleep-Out. What does it mean for a youth group to participate? Youth are to show up with their groups at 7PM with their own sleeping materials (fit for 30 degree weather), and will be on site until around 8AM. The night will begin with the community teach-in, followed by a service project and a youth advocacy opportunity. After this we will be showing the documentary “The Homestretch” about youth homelessness in the United States. After dark, youth will sleep/hang out outside throughout the night on the church property creating a visual display to bring awareness to youth homelessness.

As part of this campaign and Sleep-Out, we are asking youth groups throughout the community to do some fundraising leading up to the event. We are fundraising through GiveGab, participants can make their own account, share with friends, and begin fundraising through this medium. The fundraising doesn’t stop here – funds raised at the Sleep Out event will be split between the Salvation Army Teen Drop-In Center and EmpowerMT, with donations items going  directly to the Teen-Drop-In Center. There will be a fire pit present for warmth, and food provided for participants!

Below is our group registration form for the Sleep-Out! All organizations will be responsible for their youth participants as this will be an overnight event. We are excited to get youth and organizations throughout the community involved in this project! Please drop off or email group registration forms to EmpowerMT.  Please contact us with any further questions about the campaign & Sleep Out 🙂
