New Program Announcement: The Be You Crew

New Program Announcement: The Be You Crew

We are excited to be piloting a group for youth in 4th through 7th grade who identify as LGBTQ+ or want to learn more about supporting their peers.

Empower Montana currently runs an LGBTQ+ high school group called Youth Forward. Youth Forward was founded by a group of high school students who wanted a supportive space to learn about LGBTQ+ issues and explore their own identities.

When Youth Forward started, high school was the most common time for young people to come out as LGBTQ+. Through our work in the elementary and middle schools, we are seeing many students coming out at a younger age. With the increase in our youngest students beginning to identify as LGBTQ+, we at Empower Montana hope to create a new program to support the needs of this age group. We envision a program that will provide a safe space for youth to learn, make friends, and build pride in themselves.

The group, which we have decided to call The Be You Crew,  will meet for five weeks on Thursdays from 4-5:30. Our first meeting will take place at our office (1124 Cedar St. Missoula, MT 59801) on Thursday January 11th. Below is a brief outline of the topics we plan to cover in this pilot program along with any other topics our youth and families wish to explore.

  • Week 1 (Jan 11th)– Introductions and Goals/Needs
  • Week 2 (Jan 18th)– Gender and Sexuality 101
  • Week 3 (Jan 25th)– Responding to Bullying/Harassment
  • Week 4 (Feb 1st)–  Allyship Skills
  • Week 5 (Feb 8th)–  Self-pride Day
